Boxes of Time

We all have things in boxes that over time end up in an attic.  While installing a PA system in my house, yes a PA system, but that's another blog, I came across a box full of stuff my my days in the military!!

Those days were filled with activity off duty.  My old fielder's glove from when I use to play women's slow pitch softball.  My position was always center field.  For some reason I could get right up under that ball and the hitter was out!!

I started playing on the softball teams when I was stationed at Schofield Barricks HI!! The team pic brought back a lot of memories, how the Schofield Barricks BobCats beat the Cal Vada Valley Virgins, which was composed of bored officers wives, like they had a chance against us and our gum chewing!!! We beat them in the finals and went on to take the regional finals in Colorado and take a trophy home to our unit.

One thing for sure, once you played on a winning team, it followed you from one duty station to the next.  For me it was Ft Ignorance is Bliss TX.  Now that is a place let me tell you.  The only 5 star general left alive from WWII General Omar Bradley, lived on post.  Came to all our games and just enjoyed himself, but he didn't look a thing like Karl Malden who played him in the movie Patton.  When he came out to watch  us play, we knew the pressure was on.  Ft Bliss was softball crazy!! I mean it!! The weather there afforded the teams an eleven month season instead of five.  I played on one of the hospital teams.  BAMC (Beaumont Army Medical Center) supported several teams that were also in the El Paso city softball leagues, Our uniforms resembled the NY Yankee's in that they were pin stripped, Across the back of the shirt was BAMC OB-GYN, the image between the letters was a replica of the female reproductive system with the words "At Your Cervix" directly below the image.

We took the division championship, city championship and went on to win the regional title 5 times. The fielder's glove saw it all!! The BobCats getting the the faces of the Umps when we played the Cal Vada Valley Virgins, the BAMC OB-GYN games, and the overtimes we had to put in to win, and all those times I got right up under that baseball knowing that the hitter was out, and then throwing it to one of the bases to out another player.

I'm in a coven of about 29, which includes husbands, boyfriends, sons, daughters, neices, etc.  We're planning on getting a game together as soon as the weather warms up.
You can be sure we'll choose a name other that Valley Virgins or OB-GYN!!!
